JEMS Unveils New Philosophy in Paint by Number Mural
[Jeffersonville] - Food shoppers at the local supermarket will soon be greeted by a huge mural on the side of the firehouse, as they head for Peck's Market in Jeffersonvile. Measuring twenty-four feet long and eight feet high, the colorful mural is being donated by renowned artist Trey Speegle, as part of a community beautification project in the village.
The mural itself, a paint by number proclaiming "Cultivate Your Community", was conceived to inspire the community at large. JEMS, Jeffersonville's resident beautification group, wanted to create a message that spoke of the work it takes to build and maintain a community. JEMS Vice President, Robert Fisher, had one artist in mind to take on such a task, Youngsville resident Trey Speegle.
"I've been in Sullivan County now for nearly 15 years and I'm excited about this mural being so close to where I live and create my work." says the artist. "I hope people like it and that it inspires more people to get involved with their local communities."
Speegle's work uses vintage paint-by-number as reference and inspiration and he has collaborated with Anthroplogie Home on a line featuring his work. In 2009, he created a backdrop for Stella McCartney's Paris fashion show and a print of that image, YES, is available on 20x200.com.
Local businesses Echo Letterpress and Global Home have respectively worked with Trey on a print series and exhibited his work. His paintings are shown widely (he currently has shows in Houston & Toronto) and he is represented by Benrimon Contemporary in New York City, where he will be exhibiting in their September show, "Word Up".
"We wanted to make a big impact with the mural", said Fisher. "The firehouse location in Peck's parking lot is the physical center of our community. In addition to beautifying a blank wall with a giant work of art it will also provide JEMS with an opportunity to promote it's community message."
The firehouse location was an inspired choice for another reason, it serves the community as the prime example of how volunteerism impacts a community.
"We're thrilled that the firemen not only liked the artwork but graciously donated the space for this project", remarked Cat Scott, JEMS Project Coordinator. "I think their involvement adds another dimension to our project."
JEMS is currently competing in Sullivan Renaissance's Category C grant program. Their other projects this year include a new ornamental grass garden at The Jeff Bank, planting ornamental pear trees on Main Street as well as maintaining the existing gardens on Main Street.
